What is Bactrim DS Tablet

Bactrim DS contains two active ingredients: Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim.

It treats various bacterial diseases such as the middle ear, urine, respiratory, and intestinal infections.

Additionally, it is used to prevent and treat a specific type of Pneumonia (Pneumocystis Jiroveci).

This medicine is only effective against specific types of infection. It is ineffective against viral infections (such as flu).

It is a prescription-based medication prescribed only to people with known medical conditions.

Bactrim DS Tablet Uses

It is prescribed to treat many infections caused by bacteria and Pneumocystis Jiroveci Pneumonia.

Bacterial Infections

Infections brought or induced by bacteria are referred to as bacterial infections.

It is caused when bacteria enter the body, grow, and make the body react.

Bacteria can get into your body through a cut, surgical wound, or airway.

The antibiotic Bactrim DS is helpful for bacterial infections of the lungs, throat, urinary tract, ear, and stomach.

Pneumocystis Jiroveci Pneumonia

Pneumocystis Jiroveci Pneumonia (PJP) is characterized by a sudden onset of fever, cough, difficulty breathing, dry cough with little or no mucus, and chest pain.

Antibiotics are usually the best way to treat PJP, whether it is mild, moderate, or severe.

Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole has been shown to be effective in treating PJP.

How does Bactrim DS Tablet work

Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim are the two active salts of Bactrim DS.

Bacteria use folic acid to make the nucleic acids and proteins required for their growth and survival.

Sulfamethoxazole stops bacteria from making Dihydrofolic acid by competing with Para Aminobenzoic acid (PABA).

Trimethoprim inhibits bacteria from converting Dihydrofolate into Tetrahydrofolate (the active form of Folic acid) by binding to and reversibly blocking the required enzyme, Dihydrofolate

As a result, Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim block two consecutive steps that are important for bacteria to make nucleic acids and proteins.
